$APE Coin
$APE is an Ethereum token with a total supply of 1 billion. Initially, 62% of the total supply of ApeCoin is allocated to the ApeCoin community, with a portion claimable by BAYC (Bored Ape Yacht Club) NFT holders.
ApeCoin is billed as a “token for culture, gaming, and commerce used to empower a decentralized community building at the forefront of web3.
First and foremost, it’s important to note the new players in the BAYC ecosystem. The newly founded ApeCoinDAO is the creator behind the launch of ApeCoin, not Yuga Labs or the Bored Ape Yacht Club. ApeCoinDAO exists to give $APE token holders a vote on fund allocations, governance rules, projects, partnerships, and beyond. Holding ApeCoin is the only requirement for membership in the ApeCoinDAO.
The ApeCoinDAO is also supported by the Ape Foundation. The Ape Foundation is not the overseer of ApeCoin, but more of the steward of $APE. The foundation will act as the base layer upon which ApeCoin holders in the ApeCoinDAO can build.
The Ape Foundation will utilize the Ecosystem Fund, which is controlled by a multisig wallet. This fund will be used to pay expenses as directed by the ApeCoinDAO and provides an infrastructure for ApeCoin holders to collaborate through open and permissionless governance processes.
Finally, a special council on the Ape Foundation (the Board) will provide oversight of the Foundation administrators. The purpose of the Board is to administer DAO proposals and serve the vision of the community. It meets on proposals requiring administrative review under ApeCoinDAO rules.
The initial Board will serve for a term of six months, after which the ApeCoinDAO will vote on new members annually. Currently, the council consists of Alexis Ohanian (co-founder of Reddit, general partner and founder of Seven Seven Six), Amy Wu (head of ventures & gaming at FTX), Maaria Bajwa (principal at Sound Ventures), Yat Siu (co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands), and Dean Steinbeck (president and general counsel at Horizen Labs).
$APE Coin Airdrop
On March 17, at 8:30 a.m. ET, 15% of the total supply of $APE coins has been available to those who owned an original Bored Ape or a Mutant Ape NFT. Holders of Bored Ape Kennel Club Dogs will need to own either an Ape or Mutant to participate.

APE NFTs
Bored Ape Yacht Club, often colloquially called Bored Apes, Bored Ape or BAYC, is a collection of 10000 unique Bored Ape NFTs— unique digital collectibles living on the Ethereum blockchain.
The collection features profile pictures of cartoon apes that are procedurally generated by an algorithm. The parent company of Bored Ape Yacht Club is Yuga Labs. Owning a Bored Ape NFT gives you full commercial rights to it, and holders are taking advantage of that in some creative ways. One Bored Ape owner set up a Twitter account for his ape where he created a backstory, turning him into Jenkins, a valet that works for the Yacht Club.
Owners of Bored Apes are considered members of the BAYC and gain access to exclusive perks such as private online spaces, exclusive merch, and members-only live events.
The Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) is an NFT project that's an extension of the Bored Ape Yacht club. It was created by Yuga Labs in August 2021 to expand the BAYC ecosystem. Similar to the BAYC.
Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) is another offshoot non-fungible token (NFT) collection derived from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection.

Part 2: $APE Staking
ApeCoin holders should be aware of three key dates:
- Dec. 5, 2022: The staking site goes live and pre-deposits begin
- Dec. 5-7, 2022: $APE contract is funded
- Dec. 12, 2022: First $APE rewards are accrued
The pre-deposit period allows $APE holders a reasonable amount of time to stake their tokens and/or NFTs and avoid a potential gas war. Thus anyone who deposits during the pre-deposit period, regardless of time, will be eligible for the same reward accrual starting on Dec. 12.
ApeCoin staking will primarily take place on ApeStake.io.
However, there are three potential ways to stake $APE, as indicated by an update from Horizen Labs on Nov. 23.
- Open-source smart contracts
- Front-end interfaces
- Third-party interfaces
Those who own Yuga Labs NFTs, like Bored or Mutant Apes, can also stake their NFTs as part of the Horizen Labs staking launch. These holders will need to take part in a "commit process" before the staking of their NFT is allowed.
To complete the commit action, each NFT owner will need to:
- Own the NFT(s) at the time of staking
- Commit with $APE
- Designate mapping for the Paired Pool (if applicable)
ApeCoin rewards, known as $APE staking emissions, will represent 17.5 percent of the total supply of the token and be distributed over a three-year period.
In the first year of staking, 100 million $APE will be released across all the staking pools.
There are four primary staking pools, to which holders of the Yuga Labs NFTs and $APE will have access.
Note that all pools require at least some amount of $APE. The four pools, and their respective first-year token allocations, are below:
- BAYC Pool: 47,105,000 tokens (47.1%)
- MAYC Pool: 30,000,000 tokens (30%)
- BAYC/MAYC + BAKC Paired Pool: 19,060,000 tokens (19.06%)
- $APE-only Pool: 3,835,000 tokens (3.83%)
There are staking caps in place as well, to be voted upon by the ApeCoin DAO ahead of each staking period. For the first staking period, those caps are as follows, on a per NFT basis:
- BAYC: 10,094 $APE
- MAYC: 2,042 $APE
- BAKC: 856 $APE
Thus a holder with three BAYC can stake and earn rewards on no more than 30,282 $APE.
Staking rewards will be provided directly proportional to the amount of staked $APE in each pool. Participants are incentivized to own the highest percentage possible within a pool, to reap the maximum rewards. Those participants are also incentivized to be staked within each pool for the maximum time.
there is an incentive mechanism to reward those who stake $APE early over future stakers. Thus the most $APE will be earned in the first 90 days of each staking period and will decrease each quarter until the end of the three-year staking period.
The staking allocations and caps will be re-evaluated after the first staking period (Year 1), ahead of future staking periods.
Staked $APE balances will not be dynamically increased, thus those who want to increase their staked balance with rewards will be required to un-stake and re-stake.
According to the above charts, The most number and also volume of airdropped $APEs were claimed during the first days of its distribution. As time goes on, we can see less and less claiming activity by $APE eliglble wallets to the extent that in some days such as 4th Juner or 30th May, not even 1 wallet have claimed airdropped $APE coin.
(the 2 above charts are in logarithmic scale, so the difference between first days and other days in numbers, is much more than what you see).
On the correlation chart, we can see despite so many other tokens that being airdropped among users, $APE token not only has not experienced drop on its price of its launch, but only experienced a rally till April 2022 and has reached its ATH price ($22.24). But after this date, we can see quite decreasing trend of $APE price over time till today and this can be mainly because of terrible crypto market situation.
On the pie chart, we can see the $APE Coin allocation distribution and its dedicated $tokens for to each group.
As mentioned earlier, 150M of total 1 Billion $APE coins (15%) are allocated for the initial airdrop distribution (to users who owned an original Bored Ape or a Mutant Ape NFT).
As we can see, the majority of Airdropped $APE tokens have been claimed by its eligible wallets.
According to the left charts, The most number of $APE airdrop receivers have claimed 1000 - 2500 $APEs.
The wallet address 0x54be3a794282c030b15e43ae2bb182e14c409c5e has claimed the highest volume of airdropped $APE (1.44M)
The majority of $APE airdrop claimers have not held their received tokens and spent their $APEs in several destinations.
On Below, we can see some of the most popular destination of this non-holders $APE spenders:
The most popular contract destination of $APE airdrop claimers is $APE token itself. On the next ranks, we can see some famous protocols such as Uniswap, 1inch & 0x (DEX), Metamask (Web3 Wallet), The Otherside (NFT).
We can also see the contract address of $APE Coin Staking on the top popular destination of $APE spenders.
In majority of months (in both terms of users and tx count), Apecoin, Uniswap and Metamask are the most popular destination of $APE airdrop receivers.
The interesting thing is that on December, there is a new popular destination on both charts: $APE Coin Staking ! This protocol is the most popular destination of $APE users on December 2022.
On the left, You can see the total number of current (today) $APE holders and also the top 20 richest $APE addresses.
As we see, Binance exchange wallet is by far currently holding the most number of $APE tokens.
And on the left charts, we can see current (today) and daily over-time distribution of $APE holders by their held amount.
As we see, The majority of holders are holding only less than 10 $APE in their wallet.
On the above charts, you can see an overall comparison of staked $APE on each pool in terms of number of stakes, number of stakers and also volume of stakes.
At the time of this writing (7 December 2022), The number of stake transactions and stakers on “$APE Only Pool” is more than other pools but the total, average and median volume of stakes on Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) pool is way more than others. $APE Only Pool is on the second rank in terms of volume.
Till Today, Bored Abe Kennel Club (BAKC) is the least popular $APE staking pool in all terms.
On the left chart, you can see the distribution of $APE stake transactions on each pool.
At the time of this writing (7 December 2022), The majority of stake transactions on $APE Only Pool are done with 100 - 1000 $APE volume.
The majority of stake transactions (more than 96%) on BAKC (The least popular pool) are also done with 100 - 1000 $APEs.
The majority of stake transactions on BAYC (the most popular pool in terms of volume) are done with 10000 - 100000 $APE volume.
and the majority of stake transactions on MAYC pool are done with 1000 - 10000 $APE volume.
On the left chart, you can see the average houlry stake actions on each pool.
A the time of this writing, $APE only pool has the most average hourly number of stake and stakers but the average hourly volume of $APE stakes on BAYC pool is more than others.
On the above charts, you can see hourly and daily $APE staking actions on each pool over time.
Similar to the airdrop chart (but not sharp like that), the majority of $APE stake actions were done within the first hours of its launch and as time goes on, the total trend line of stake actions is decreasing over time but there are some high spikes of staked $APE volume in some days such as 6th December which is mainly because of the $APE only pool.
As mentioned earlier, we can see in the most days, the stake activity on the $Ape Only Pool is more than other pools but the staked $APE volume on BAYC is more than others.
On the above charts, you can see the average number and volume of stake actions per staker on each pool and also the distribution of these stakers by their number of stake tranasctions on each pool + by their volume of stake transactions on each pool.
At the time of this writing, an average BAYC staker has staked more $APE volume than other pools average stakers and an average BAKC staker is more active than other pools’ stakers.
The majority of stakers on all pools have done only 1 stake transaction.
Summary and Conclusion
According to the above analysis:
- The majority of allocated $APE tokens for the Airdrop are already claimed by its eligible users and the main hype of the claim timespan was during the first days of its distribution.
- $APE staking has attracted high number of $APE users to the extent that this contract is the most popular destination of $APE users in December (the month that $APE staking went live).
- The staking activity during the first hours of its launch was more than later hours and as time goes on, there was a decreasing trend of $APE staking actions over time.
- $APE Only Pool and BAYC Pool are more popular staking pools and BAKC pool is the least popular one.
- $APE Only Pool is providing the least APY and MAYC Pool is providing the highest APY.

$APE Launch & Initial Token Distribution
APE has a fixed issuance of 1 billion tokens, with initial allocations broken down as follows: 62% of total allocations were made to the ApeCoin Ecosystem. Out of this, BAYC/MAYC NFT holders were airdropped 15% of the tokens while 47% were reserved for ApeDAO treasury and resources. For airdrop specifics: Bored Ape Holder received 10,094 tokens while Mutant Ape Holders received 2,042 tokens. 10,950 tokens were issued for each Bored Ape + Kennel Club pair, and 2,898 were issued for each Mutant Ape + Kennel Club pair. The remainder of the tokens is split between Yuga Labs (10%), Charity (Jane Goodall Institute) (6%), launch contributors (14%), and BAYC founders (8%). At launch, roughly 26% of the total token supply was unlocked. The remainder of the tokens is unlocked over 48 months. An average of 1.5% of the supply becomes unlocked every month.
Out of the 1 billion ApeCoin tokens issued at launch, the supply schedule is specified as follows:
- The 150000000 tokens airdropped to BAYC/MAYC NFT holders were all unlocked immediately.
- 470,000,000 tokens to DAO treasury and resources (117,500,000 unlocked at launch, then 7,343,750 unlocked per month for 48 months)
- 150,000,000 tokens to Yuga Labs (Initial lock-up of 12 months, then 4,166,666.67 unlocked per month for 36 months)
- 10,000,000 tokens to the Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation (Initial lock-up of 12 months, then 277,777.78 tokens unlocked per month for 36 months)
- 80,000,000 tokens to founders of Yuga Labs (Initial lock-up for 12 months, then 2,222,222.22 unlocked per month for 36 months)
- 140,000,000 tokens were issued to launch contributors, though the Lockup schedules vary by contributor
- On Above data, you can see detailed information about $APE staking pools and also the comparison between their APY and emissions (rewards).
- Seems MAYC Pool is providing the highest APY and $APE Pool has the least APY.

Assumptions
- Since there are only 3 days passed from the launch of $APE coin staking (at the time of this writing), APYs here are calculated in two ways:
- Assumed that 80% of Eligible $APE in each pool is staked (to make it more sensible)
- Realistic APY of each pool based on the total current staked volume on it.
- APYs are annualized
- $APE-only balance excludes treasury which is used to pay out pool emissions
