With the launch of Flipside's new Balances table, let's take a look at how the story of Osmosis can be told through wallet balances. Provide insights into following metrics: How has the ratio of liquid to staked OSMO changed overtime? Are the top 100 OSMO holders the same now as they were at the start of the year? What is the current average OSMO per wallet? How has that value changed over time? Plot average OSMO/wallet against user growth. Do wallets normally hold a majority of OSMO, or another token? How has this changed over time?
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is a DEX protocol, which means it uses smart contracts to determine the price of digital assets, to produce liquidity via a peer-to-peer (P2P) methodology, and to exact trades between users. This approach to an exchange platform is known as an AMM — a DEX protocol that prices crypto assets in liquidity pools.
What is OSMO?
OSMO is the native token of the Osmosis network. Primarily, OSMO is used for staking to secure the Osmosis chain. As a PoS token, OSMO is inflationary. Over time, new tokens will be minted and entered into circulation. The maximum number of OSMO tokens has been set at 1 billion and its current total supply is 325,000,000.

According to the left data, currently there is 384M liquid OSMO while the staked OSMO is 136.8M.
So, the ratio of Liquid to Staked OSMO is currently 281%.
Based on the left chart, 73.7% of OSMO tokens are currently as liquid and 26.3% of them are Staked.
So, the majority of OSMO token is currently liquid.
On the left chart, we can see the liquid, staked and the ratio of liquid to staked OSMO over time.
during recent days (after October), the staked OSMO amount has decreased dramatically and that’s why the ratio of liquid to staked ratio has raised from 211% to 280% in less than 2 weeks.
Totally, the liquid-to-staked ratio of OSMO was increasing till May 2022 (before Luna crash), but after this date, we can see decreasing trend on this ratio over time till October 2022, As mentioned above, after October, the liquid to staked ratio of OSMO is increasing dramatically.
According to the above charts, osmo1fl48vsnmsdzcv85q5d2q4z5ajdha8yu3aq6l09 is the top OSMO holder on both timespans (current date and start of the year 2022). There are 2 other major OSMO holders which are among the top 3 OSMO holders in both timespans and their wallet addresses are osmo1jv65s3grqf6v6jl3dp4t6c9t9rk99cd80yhvld and osmo1pvxhtre74l37p6y2rs2e8xyek75z7xlc7g2trt.
Also we can see some differ wallets among the top 10 OSMO holders between in these 2 timespans. So, Not all of the top 100 current OSMO holders are as they were at the start of the year. The users (and their wallet balance) who were among the top 100 OSMO holders at the start of the year 2022 and are still among top 100 today, are listed on the last (3rd) chart and table.
According to the left chart, 64% of top 100 OSMO holders on start of the year 2022 are not listed among the top 100 current OSMO holders.
Only almost 36% of them remains in this top holders list.
On the above charts, we can see the daily OSMO balance of top 100 holders (both timespans) over time. As we see, both groups’ balance is increasing over time but the growth rate of Current top 100 holders is sharper.
There is a huge high spike of increasing wallet balance of these users on December 2022. After and before this date, the growth rate is slightly increasing.
The average current OSMO balance of Osmosis users is 873 OSMO.
Most number of OSMO users have less than 10 OSMO | less than $10 in their wallet. the users with 10 - 100 OSMO | $10 - $100 are on the second rank.
The share of users with more than 10000 OSMO | $10000 balance in their wallets is less than 0.5% of all total users.
According to the above left chart, the average OSMO balance of wallets is clearly decreasing over time especially after December 2021. the most average OSMO balance of users were achieved on August 2021 with more than 3000 average OSMO. After this timespan, we can see decreasing trend till December 2021, After a sudden high spike on this date, we can see another huge decreasing trend over time. After July 2022, we can see a very slight increasing trend of average OSMO balance over time till today.
On the right chart, we can see most number of new OSMO users have achieved on December 2021 with a huge high spike (23.744k new users in a single day). After this date, we can see very light decreasing trend of new registered OSMO users with some high spikes over time. But, the activity of new users during recent months is still more than timespan before December 2021.
On the left chart, we can see the quite decreasing ratio of Average OSMO balance of users TO the number of new and also total OSMO users over time.
Most ratio of average OSMO balance to number of daily new users was achieved during August 2021 (65%). but this ratio has decreased dramatically to almost 1% in nowdays.
This shows that the growth rate of users is more than their average OSMO balance.
and on the left chart, we can see the decreasing trend of averager OSMO balance of OSMO users over time. as mentioned above, most average balance has achieved on August 2021 and this trend is decreasing over time.
The month with least average OSMO balance is May 2022 when the whole cryptomarket crashed because of Luna downfall.
According to the left chart, INJ is the token that OSMO users are holding the most USD value of it.
(im not sure about the correctness of this result because the numbers and also the comparison between users’ balance and total supply of this token do not make sense but anyway, the results shows this.)
OSMO and ATOM (the 2 most famous tokens on Osomosis) are on the second rank 3rd rank of this chart.
On the above charts, we can see the top 10 tokens of each months that users have most average USD value of them in their wallet.
As we see, Before January 2022, OSMO was the top asset but after this date, we can see INJ is on the first rank in all other months.
Also we can see EUR token was showing itself among top 10 tokens during months April till July 2022, But after that, we can see increasing trace of LUM token.
Totally, INJ, ATOM and OSMO are the most popular tokens in all months.
Based on the left chart, Osmosis users are currently holding the most number of LUNC token (non-USD value) currently and the HuaHua currency is on the second rank of this list.
But this is not a rational for the users’ worth, So we are going to calculate the USD value of tokens.
On the above charts, I have calculated the total USD value of tokens in users’ wallet and extracted the top 10 at the end of each month.
As we see, here too, OSMO and INJ have the most share in all months.
Summary Conclusion
- Currently, The majority of OSMO token is as liquid (almost 74%).
- Currently, There is 384M liquid OSMO while the staked OSMO is 136.8M. So, the ratio of Liquid to Staked OSMO is currently 281%.
- The ratio of liquid-to-staked OSMO was increasing till May 2022 (before Luna crash), but after this date, There was decreasing trend on this ratio over time till October 2022. after October, the liquid to staked ratio of OSMO is increasing dramatically because of the decrease in Staked OSMO.
- osmo1fl48vsnmsdzcv85q5d2q4z5ajdha8yu3aq6l09 is the top OSMO holder on both timespans (current date and start of the year 2022).
- Not all of the top 100 current OSMO holders are as they were at the start of the year. 64% of the top 100 OSMO holders at the start of the year 2022 are not listed among the top 100 current OSMO holders. Only almost 36% of them remains in this top holders list.
- The average current OSMO balance of Osmosis users is 873 OSMO.
- There is a quite decreasing ratio of the average OSMO balance of users TO the number of new and also total OSMO users over time. This shows that the growth rate of users is more than their average OSMO balance.
- INJ is the token that OSMO users are holding the most USD value of it. OSMO and ATOM are on the second rank 3rd rank in this terms.
- Without considering the value of tokens, the OSMO token is the most popular token among Osmosis users that has the most number of current holders. ATOM is in the second rank and USTC is in the 3rd rank.
- Before January 2022, OSMO was the top asset with the most USD value in users balance but after this date, INJ is on the first rank in all other months.

According to the left chart, the share of users with less than 10 OSMO balance has inscreased dramatically after December 2021. Other groups’ share has decreased on this timespan.
After December, we can see almost equal share of these groups over time.
Methodology
In this dashboard, We are going to perform some deep analysis of the OSMO wallet balance of Osmosis users mainly using Flipside’s new balance table for Osmosis: osmosis.core.fact_daily_balances.
There are 4 balance types in this table which are liquid, staked, locked liquidity, and superfluid staked. For the first bounty question (ratio of liquid to staked OSMO) we have to compare liquid
OSMO amount vs its staked
amount.
The currency for OSMO Token in this table is 'uosmo' and its decimal number is 6. meaning that we should divide the balance amount by 6 to extract the actual OSMO balance of wallets.
For extracting the current date data, we have to filter results to maximum date from **osmosis.core.fact_daily_balances. (**date = select max (date) from osmosis.core.fact_daily_balances).
In some charts, I have also extracted the USD price of OSMO and other tokens by using osmosis.core.dim_prices and osmosis.core.dim_labels.
Since the dim_prices does not have currency column (only has symbol column), we have to join this table dim_labels table (which its address column is equal to the currency column in fact_daily_balances table**).**
Today’s (The Analysis’) date is 22nd October 2022 | 2022-10-22. (In case in some charts we are mentioning the current date)
How has the ratio of liquid to staked OSMO changed overtime?
Are the top 100 OSMO holders the same now as they were at the start of the year?
What is the current average OSMO per wallet? How has that value changed over time? Plot average OSMO/wallet against user growth.
On the above charts, we can see the distribution of osmosis users based on their OSMO balance over time. as we see, the growth rate and the total share of users with less than 10 OSMO in all days is way more than all other types.
Do wallets normally hold a majority of OSMO, or another token? How has this changed over time?
For this part, First I have calculated the number of tokens of each currency that each Osmosis user is currently holding. but since this is not meaningful, I have analysed same data by USD value of tokens.
On the left chart, without considering the value of tokens, we can see OSMO token is the most popular token among Osmosis users that has the most number of current holders.
ATOM is on the second rank here and USTC is on the 3rd rank.
