NBA Playoff Usage
The NBA playoffs games started in the second half of April. In the present work, we intend to find the effect of the start of these competitions on the volume of transactions in the Flow network and the NBA Top Shots platform.
Introduction
There has been a lot of hot news about the NBA games since mid-April (NBA Playoff). As a result of this extensive news coverage, anything related to these competitions will probably be promoted. On the other hand, NBA Top Shot is an NFT marketplace where sports fans can buy, sell and trade basketball video clips. Thus, it is expected that the sales of NFTs in this collection will increase. In this work, we study the volume of Flow and NBA Top Shots transactions since mid-April.
Conclusion
After calculating the flow transactions and the NBA Top Shots, the following results were obtained:
1- The number of transactions in April coincided with the NBA playoffs and increased considerably which can be a sign of more NFTs purchased by sports fans, especially basketball
2-Although the number of Flow transactions has increased slightly, over April, the increase in sales of the NBA Top Shot NFTs did not change the overall trend of flow transactions.
Part 1: Flow Transactions
Flow charts have consecutive peaks. Although the number of transactions has peaked several times, the two main peaks occurred in June, the first on June 10 with 1.5 million transactions and the second on June 25 with 1.9 million transactions. In addition, in a general division, it can be said that before June, the number of transactions on the Flow network was within a limitation (below 900k), but in June, it entered an upward trend, which resulted in the two peaks mentioned. Unfortunately, the data of Flipside tables has a time limit for the time of April 15, but after this date (mid-April), no significant change in the volume of the flow has been observed, although on May 6, it reached a local maximum of 850k transactions.
Part 2: NBA Top Shots Transactions
In the second chart, you can see the volume of NBA Top Shots Transactions. As shown, in contrast to the previous chart, a trend is observed here. The number of transactions in April coincided with the NBA playoffs and increased considerably which can be a sign of more NFTs purchased by sports fans, especially basketball. Another reason could be the advertisements made by the players and sponsors of these teams. However, what is clear is that the start of this sporting event has had a huge impact on the volume of NBA Top Shots Transactions. the highest transaction volume for this platform occurred on May 6, and then the downward trend of this chart started and has continued until now.
The table below compares the number of Flow and the NBA Top Shots transactions in general. As it is clear, the number of NBA Top Shots transactions is a small number (1.4 M) which is less than four percent. Therefore, the increase in sales of the NBA Top Shot NFTs in the second half of April should not be expected to change the overall trend of flow transactions.
