Realms vs Snapshot - A Quick Overview

In this dashboard, we are looking for a quick comparison of two voting platforms in the Ethereum and Solana blockchains, namely Snapshot and Realms, and we want to see which of them is superior in terms of user growth rate and DAO activities.

    What is Realms?

Realms provides a platform for builders on Solana to create a DAO, manage their members, vote on proposals, and allocate their treasury. Realms has the tools and integrations to help multisig, NFT community DAO, or community token DAO to run. Realms serves as the frontend for SLP Governance a DAO-type and asset-type agnostic standard for building and maintaining DAOs on Solana.

    What is snapshot?

Snapshot is a decentralized voting system. It provides flexibility on how voting power is calculated for a vote. Snapshot supports various voting types to cater to the needs of organizations. Creating proposals and voting on Snapshot is user-friendly and does not cost gas as the process is performed off-chain.

In short, Snapshot is an off-chain gasless multi-governance client with easy to verify and hard to contest results.

    Work Description

In this dashboard, we are looking for a quick comparison of two voting platforms in the Ethereum and Solana blockchains, namely snapshot and realms, and we want to see which one is superior in terms of the growth rate of users as well as the activity of users and DAOs.

Considering that the number of users and organizations in Snapshot is much higher than that of Realms, and if we rely only on numbers, Snapshot will be the final winner, we have tried to normalize the obtained numbers and statistics as much as possible to allow a fair comparison.

On this basis, the general statistics on voting and voters for both platforms were first presented. Then, the two platforms were compared and analyzed based on four different criteria, and in all cases, normalization was attempted based on a specific criterion. The description of each section is given below.

Normalization of the Number of Voters

To make a fair comparison between these two voting platforms, we need to normalize the metrics to some scale. For the number of voters, we do this by comparing the ratio between the voters of 2022 and the active users of that year.

    > Active User: a user who started a transaction in 2022 (Ethereum) or is one of the signers of at least one transaction (Solana).

By determining the number of active users of Ethereum and Solana this year, we choose the percentage of voters relative to the total active users of each blockchain as a normalized measure to compare the two platforms.

Another criterion we can use to compare voter growth is the growth in the number of voters in consecutive months. We have examined this criterion for both platforms.

The following three graphs show the number of active users of these two blockchains based on the above definition and the result of the test of the two criteria mentioned.

    1. Number of Voters : Ethereum

    • As you can see from the graph on the right, the ratio of Snapshot voters to all Ethereum users is about six times higher than the number of Realms voters to active Solana users.

    • Looking at the monthly growth in voter numbers, both platforms have shown a strong increase in voter numbers in early summer, although the percentage increase in voter numbers is much higher for Realms, but in August the number of Snapshot voters shows a very strong growth, while Realms shows a decrease in user numbers in this month and in previous months. Therefore, we can declare Snapshot the winner in terms of monthly user growth by a narrow margin.

So in terms of the number of voters, considering both criteria, the Snapshot platform wins.

Voters from the Perspective of Proposals/DAOs

Another way to normalize the number of voters for these two platforms, Realms and Snapshot, is to include the number of proposals/DAOs and normalize the number of voters based on that numbers. For this purpose, we consider the average number of voters for each proposal/DAOs.

The charts below show these averages for the two platforms along with the maximum value for each metric.

    2. Average Number of Voters per Proposal : Ethereum

    • As can be seen from the charts above, Ethereum is the winner of the average number of voters per proposal by a large margin. Even if we calculate the weighted average based on the number of active users of each blockchain - in which case the number of Solana voters would need to be multiplied by 3 - the difference is still large.

==So the winner in the average number of voters per proposal is Ethereum.==

    3. Average Number of Voters per DAOs: Realms

    • Looking at the average number of individual voters per DAO, both platforms are close to each other. But considering the much larger number of active users of Ethereum, the winner of this episode will undoubtedly be Realms.
    • Of course, keep in mind that the number of Realms proposals per DAO is probably much higher than Ethereum's, so these averages are so close. In the next part, we will explore this issue.

Proposals and DAOs : Who has more active DAOs?

As a final part of the review of these two voting platforms, we check the activity level of the DAOs in terms of number of proposals to see which platform is more active between Snapshot and Realms.

As you can see in the chart to the right, the number of active DAOs in Snapshot is obviously not comparable to Realms, but if we use the average number of proposals, we can compare the two. What we did next.

The following two graphs show the average and maximum number of proposals per DAO.

    4. Average Number of Proposals per DAOs: Realms

The winner of this part of the comparison is Realms by a large margin, which means that the average number of proposals per DAO is much higher in Realms than in Snapshot.

The conclusion of this section is that the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) are much more active in Realms than in Snapshot and their users make many more proposals.

    Who's the Winner?

To determine the final winner, we have to proceed with caution.

If we look at the number of users and DAOs, Snapshot is definitely the winner. However, if we look at the activity of users and DAOs and the influence of users on the control of DAOs, the winning card goes to Realms.

Therefore, depending on the point of view we choose, each of these two platforms can win the comparison.
