$MATIC is the native token of the Polygon network and is primarily used to (1) Pay for gas, and (2) stake validator nodes to secure the network while earning rewards in the process. In this dashboard, we will be looking at the amount of $MATIC staked since July 1, 2022 and the ratio of staked to circulating $MATIC within the same period.

Staked $MATIC are tokens that have been delegated to validators to secure the network. They are sort of frozen and cannot be moved until undelegated.

$MATIC in circulation refers to tokens that are sitting inside individual wallets and can be traded and moved around without restrictions.

$MATIC contract address on Ethereum mainnet is 0x7d1afa7b718fb893db30a3abc0cfc608aacfebb0, and staking is done on mainnet to the contract 0x5e3ef299fddf15eaa0432e6e66473ace8c13d908. Using this info, we computed $MATIC staked since July 1 2022 to be about 1 billion with the most stakes in a single day coming in late August 2022.

For the amount of $MATIC tokens that were staked, there were 6.74 billion sitting in user wallets and liquidity pools as circulating $MATIC. Therefore since July 1, 2022, for every 1 staked $MATIC, there are 6.5 of the same token in circulation, making a ratio of 1:6.5

Comparing $MATIC staked and unstaked daily, we can see that the trend is inverse. While staking seem to be on the gentle rise recently, unstaking was at its peak earlier on the 4th day of July 2022, but recent numbers suggest a decline.
