NEAR Gas Guzzlers

    Question

    • What contracts are users spending the most gas on to use? How has this changed over the past week? Past month?

      \n

    Introduction

    • Near is a layer-1 blockchain, it went live in April 2020, and before a year they released their rainbow bridge a bridge between NEAR the official token and ETH, users of near can have a “human-readable” account ID instead of public key hashes.
    • But the theme of today is about gas usage, so i’ll focus on the top 7 programs with most transactions, and then look the total, average and max gas usage they have.

First let’s have a look of the top 7 programs by total transactions.

Aurora (57.3M tx) and app.nearcrowd.near (47.3M tx) have the most activity, after that every program has less than 3.5M of transactions, thats the reason is only a top 7, because the other programs doesn’t have the impact as the first 2 places.

Now let’s see the total gas used in Near

Most of the activity comes from the year 2022

Aurora is the program with most gas used as expected of a ETH related program.

    Nearcrowd is in second place

v2.nearapps.near has a spike in March 2022, probably because of the valley of Aurora, so users were looking to bridge ETH with other apps.

    • 2021 activity isn’t relevant in comparison with 2022, so for the next gas charts i’ll look only to 2022.

Now looking at 2022 Gas activity, maximum gas fee and average gas fee

    Methodology

    • Using Flipside data banks tables:
      • near.core.fact_transactions: To look at the programs with most transactions by “tx_receiver”, and then calculate the gas with gas_used and sum/max/avg functions.

As expected Aurora has the biggest average gas fee except for some days in March 2022

But in Half June to Half July Aurora average gas fee it goes down.

Moment which v2.nearapps.near rises only to dissapear

And x.paras.near is for some days the program with higher average gas fee

Only to lose in the second half of july by Aurora again.

But the question is about the users spending the most gas possible, so let’s look at the maximum gas fees in the year 2022

Aurora is the winner, with always in 2022 the maximum gas fee daily.

X.paras.near presents the second maximum gas fee until March 2022, but this isn’t the case in the past months

In June and July the second place is a constant daily fight by v2.ref-finance.near priceoracle.near and x.paras.near

Although Nearcrowd app has a lot of presence in number of transactions, gas usage is really low.

    Summary

    • Aurora is by far the most expensive program, as expected because is a ETH related program.
    • Filter by expensive gas fee in the last months, a lot of NFTs related programs appear, although some days they win as the most expensive, Aurora is by far the expensive
