Introduction

NBA Top Shot is an NFT marketplace where sports fans can buy, sell and trade basketball video clips. Launched in 2020, NBA Top Shot is a partnership between the NBA and Dapper Labs. High-profile investors include the NBA legends Michael Jordan, Kevin Durrant and Klay Thompson.

Moment NFTs are the official NBA collectibles that celebrate the game’s most epic moments from the best basketball stars. They are the main parts of NBA Top Shot and record some of the best plays from all over NBA.

Daily Traders Count

The following charts show the number of daily buyers and sellers and their ratio.

It can be seen that on average, 45% of the users are buyers and 55% of them are sellers.

Top Play Types By Sales Volume

The following chart, shows the types of top play types based on their sales volume.

The following points can be inferred:

• These charts show the same results as the last section, Rim is the top lay type here, as well.
• The sales volume of the Rim type is 1.75x of the next top type.
• While the sales count was 2.6x than the next type, the sales volume is only 1.75x more. This can mean that although Rim NFTs have sold a lot more, their volume is far less, which can in turn mean that probably NFTs of Rim type are traded at a cheaper price point than other types.

Top Play Types By Sales Count

The chart below shows the types of top play types based on their sales count.

It can be seen that:

• Rim type has the most sales number, followed by “3 Pointers” and Assist.
• Rim has more than 40% of sales share.
• Rim has 2.6 times more sales than the next top play type.

Not surprisingly, because these roles play near the basket and have the most opportunity to score a goal, which is the most exciting moment in a game.

Approach

In this study, the following tables are used

flow.core.fact_nft_sales → this table contains the sales data.

flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata → this table contains data for topshot moments, including player, team, stats and more.

flow.core.fact_prices → this table contains price data

The main currencies used to trade Top Shot Moments are FLOW and DapperUtilityToken, the price of FLOW is acquired from the flow.core.fact_prices table, each DapperUtilityToken equals 1 USD.

In order to get the NFT holders, Left Exclusive Join is used, where table A contains all the buy activities and table B contains all the sell activities.

The data for Flow network is available from April 20, so this time frame is used in this study.

Whales are defined as users with more than 1000 nft trade transaction.

Daily Sales

The chart below shows the daily sales of the Moment NFTs.

It can be seen that:

• On May 3th the collection have had a very sharp increase in sales count.
• During May and beginning of June, the collection have seen a respectable number of sales.
• After this period, the sales count have seen a decline.
• Although the sales count was lower during April, the volume have been very high.
• Assist role had a very high sales on May 4th.
• On June 15, Mid range role have seen a very high volume.
• Block role had an acceptable amount of sales at the end of April and the beginning of the June.
• Rim role had have a few days of very high volume such as last days of April, May 6th and June 7th.

Top Play Types Held by Users

The following chart, shows the amount of moment NFTs held by users by their play types. Rim type is by far the most held play type.

Summary

• Rim type has the most sales number, followed by “3 Pointers” and Assist.
• Rim has 2.6 times more sales than the next top play type.

Daily Whales Sales Count

Let’s look at the whales activity, the following chart show their activities.

It can be seen that,

• whales have been very active during May 6th and June 7th, based on sales count and volume.
• On the days mentioned above, whales mostly bought Rim.
• by the end of the May, whales become more active, and during beginning of June, whales been relatively active.

Daily Whale Buyers Count

The next chart shows the number of whales compared to other buyers.

• Whales buying activity have increased since June.
• On July 14, 15 and 16, whales activity has increased.
