[ENS][Q5] Was the ENS airdrop a secret?

Look at ENS registrations before and after the cutoff date for the airdrop. Do you notice anything suspicious that makes you think that some people knew the airdrop was coming?

The above chart shows the registrations per day over time.

At a glance, there seems to be nothing suspicious up until October ends...

    Let's ZOOM IN.

    • Everything seems to be perfectly normal up until 31st-1st November. 31st October was the snapshot date for the airdrop.

    • Now, Nov 1st, 2nd & 3rd have a relative uptick in the number of registrations. This was very likely due to ENS publicly announcing the formation of the DAO and all related tweets/blogs/forum posts on the topic. Along with media coverage. The posts started around afternoon/evening 1st November.

    • Things cool off for a bit up till the actual airdrop/launch of the ENS DAO token. Why the absurd uptick in the number of registrations? It's difficult to explain but here are some thoughts!

    • The Airdrop launch would have attracted enormous media/public attention. As such, lots of new users would have flocked to get their very first ENS domain.

    • People who received the airdrop would have wanted to support the ENS' efforts further and likely registered more domains as a show of goodwill.

    • With all the media attention and coverage, the amount of 'flippers' would have increased too. Flippers here are people who block a large number of domains that might become more valuable later as the names represent a celebrity/ a famous brand/icon etc.

    Conclusion

The airdrop seems to have been as fair as possible with regards to insider trading/info. No such outliers given Crypto/Defi standards!
