Osmosis Quarterly Performance Report

A quarterly overview of Osmosis, the leading decentralized exchange on Cosmos

    Methodology

The analysis of Osmosis' performance over the previous quarters has demonstrated that it has been in a downward trajectory since the first quarter of 2022. Even those metrics that saw a recovery in 2023 have still been lower compared to their peak. Some segments such as users, governance, and staking regained some momentum in the first quarter of 2023. On the other hand, segments such as transactions, swaps, and liquidity pools, which are directly related to the main application of Osmosis, have been in a downtrend even during the first quarter of 2023.

The purpose of this dashboard is to provide an overview of the Osmosis ecosystem on a quarterly basis. The analysis starts with some fundamental aspects of the blockchain like transactions and users, then addresses different segments of the network, such as swaps and liquidity pools. The impact of the launch of the Mars Protocol in early 2023 has also been evaluated if it was relevant.

Most of the charts contain the values of a measured metric per quarter, plus the percentage change of that metric compared to its previous quarter. In some cases, the vol

Osmosis is a Cosmos-based blockchain that offers a decentralized exchange and liquidity provision platform. It uses Proof-of-Stake consensus and a unique AMM algorithm called the "Weighted Price-Time (WPT)" curve to ensure fair pricing and incentivize liquidity providers. It also has a governance system for user participation in platform development. Osmosis aims to provide a flexible and accessible DEX for trading a wide variety of tokens with reduced impermanent loss risk.

    Swaps

The volume of swaps on Osmosis peaked in the second quarter of 2022 which coincides with the crash of Terra. After that, the volume massively decreased to levels below $1b and remained in that range. Even the recent growth in the whole crypto market in Q1 of 2023 has not helped increase the swaps volume of Osmosis. The number of swappers peaked in 2022 Q1 and It has been decreasing since. However, the decrease was less significant, although the number of swappers dropped from more than 250k addresses to around 100k users in the first quarter of 2023.

    Blocks and Transactions

The number of blocks created on Osmosis had an overall quarter-over-quarter increase since the second half of 2021. The number of distinct transactions peaked in the first quarter of 2022. Since then, it has halved and decreased to around 10m for the last three quarters.

    Active and New Users

The number of new users coming into Osmosis also peaked back in 2022 Q1. While it continued to decrease throughout 2022, it has started to increase since 2023 has started. The number of active users has also been through the same pattern, however, its decrease was much less significant. The increase in the number of new and active users during Q1 of 2023 could be attributed to the impact of the Mars protocol's launch to some degree.

    Liquidity Pools

The deposited volume into liquidity pools and the number of users providing the liquidity have considerably decreased since their peak back in Q1 of 2022. This was also the case for those withdrawing liquidity from the pools. For the first time since the second half of 2021, the volume of withdrawals surpassed the volume of deposits during the 2023 Q1. The fees paid by users interacting with different liquidity pools have also decreased since the second quarter of 2022.

    Governance

The number of proposals has been more than 50 per quarter since Q4 of 2021. While they decreased during the last two quarters of 2022, the number of proposals reached their all-time high during the Q1 of 2023. The number of votes peaked in the second quarter of 2022 and drastically decreased the next quarter. However, it has been on a rise in the last 3 quarters. The number of voters has also started to increase since the beginning of 2023 after a considerable drop during the second half of 2022.

    Staking

Staking had a different trend compared to other segments. The OSMO staked volume has had a positive net volume throughout the measured period and reached its peak in the third quarter of 2022. Although during the last quarter of 2022, the unstaked volume was considerable, the 2023 Q1 observed a trend similar to the rest of 2022. The number of stakers was also significantly higher than those that unstaked their OSMO. While it was in a downward trajectory throughout 2022, it started to increase since the start of 2023.

    OSMO Balance

The OSMO balance of wallets has steadily increased over the past few quarters closing the gap with the 1b total OSMO level. While it had a considerable jump during 2022 Q1, the increase was more moderate since then. The analysis of OSMO balances by type has also demonstrated that while the liquid and staked balances both had a higher share and a higher growth rate, the pool and locked liquidity remained relatively the same during the measured period.
