Miners' Response to the the Merge
Introduction to Miners and this dashboard
- Ethereum, like Bitcoin, uses a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism prior to September 15th 2022.
- The process of creating a block of transactions to be added to the Ethereum blockchain is known as mining.
- Miners are Ethereum wallet addresses who have successfully added a given block to the blockchain.
- In this dashboard, we will look into whether miners have stopped mining in recent weeks as a result of the fast-approaching Merge.

- The weekly average number of blocks mined by Ethereum miners was 43.1k.
- With the exception of the week of September 5th, 2022, the number of blocks mined per week on Ethereum has remained above the average of 43.1k in recent weeks as we approach the Merge.
- This indicates that, with the exception of the most recent week of September 5th 2022, blocks on Ethereum are still being produced as usual in the recent weeks leading up to the Merge.
- There is no evidence that miners have stopped mining or that the rate of Ethereum block production has slowed.

Methodology
- The ethereum.core_fact_blocks table is used to obtain Ethereum’s block level data in this dashboard.
- The default start_date is set to be ‘2022-01-01’.
- If miners’ blocks mined and total number of miners in recent weeks become lower than their averages since January 1st 2022, then we can infer that miners have stopped mining in recent weeks in light of the Merge.

Sections in this dashboard
- Number of Blocks Mined by Week
- Number of Unique Miners by Week
i. Number of Blocks Mined by Week
- The weekly average for unique Ethereum miners is 62.5.
- The number of unique miners has been hovering around 62.5 in recent weeks as we approach the Merge, and the categories into which miners are divided based on their number of blocks mined per week have remained almost the same.
- This indicates that few to no miners have stopped mining as the Merge approaches; miners still continues to mine until the Merge occurs.
- There is no evidence, once again, that miners have stopped mining prior to the Merge.
Conclusion
- The average number of blocks mined by Ethereum miners per week was 43.1k.
- The number of blocks mined per week on Ethereum has remained above the average of 43.1k in recent weeks as we approach the Merge, with the exception of the week of September 5th, 2022.
- There is no evidence that miners have stopped mining or that the rate at which Ethereum blocks are being produced has slowed.
- The weekly average for the number of unique Ethereum miners is 62.5.
- As we approach the Merge, the number of unique miners has been hovering around 62.5 in recent weeks, similar to the number of blocks mined per week.
- This indicates that as the Merge approaches, few to no miners have stopped mining; miners continue to mine until the Merge occurs.
- Again, there is no evidence that miners stopped mining prior to the Merge.
