    Near’s Gas Guzzlers

In this dashboard, we investigate the GASSIEST contacts on Near on a seven and 30 day period to understand how users are interacting with the platform. Metrics included are total gas, average gas per transaction, distributions, and number of transactions

Near Gas Consumers on a 7 Day Period

In order to find the gassiest contracts, the tx_receiver was analyzed to see how much they consumed for the last 7 days. The query was limited only to the top 25 addresses. What is interesting when it comes to the biggest gas consumers, most of them are not labelled. A few of these addresses are NFTs. The second biggest consumer of gas is Chromeknights an NFT collection. NFTs tend to be one of the more computationally expensive acts on a blockchain network. The top consumer of Gas is tipbot app, which is a dapp that transforms a telegram chat by using bots to connect to your Near address. If you look at the # of transactions vs total gas the results are quite skewed because of the tipbot. This feature is one of the most popular apps but is actually not that gassy overall, just has a lot of use! For comparison, Chrome knights is about 3x as much gas per transaction than tipbot. For the most part, there is a linear pattern observed for the number of transactions vs the total amount of gas. Out of the top 25 gas consumers, The gassiest per transaction is actually a contract used for staking coming in at around 24.7 Near Tokens per Transaction

    Total Gas - 30 Days

For the past 30 days, the list was expanded to 250 addresses. Once again tipbot is the gassiest user coming in with around 285k gas consumed. However, most of that came within the last week (170k). Additionally, even with adding another 200 addresses, tipbot’s share was only diluted by 20% in terms of its market share. Most of the NFT projects that were featured on the 7-day list dropped down. Stakingwallet 2 is once again of the gassiest users as well. Once again looking at transactions vs total gas, tipbot is just way far ahead in terms of both gas consumed and total transactions. Most of the other protocols are clustered around the bottom. One point I do want to point out though is that these contracts are only a fraction of the gas consumed on the Near network

    Conclusion

In conclusion, near addresses were analyzed to find the addresses that consumed the most amount of gas. Two separate analyses were completed on a 7-day (top 25) and 30-day (top 250) basis. From this analysis, it was discovered that the gassiest address for both was near’s tipbot. Tipbot was far above all other addresses in terms of total gas and total transactions. However, it was quite lower compared to the average gas per transaction. In addition, NFT contracts seemeed to be quite large on the 7-day basis such as chrome knights but feel down the rankings for a 30-day comparison. Overall this was an interesting insight into gas behavior on the near network
