Uniswap Central Exchange Flow

Analysis of the flow coming in and out of Central Exchanges for the UNI token

    Introduction

    Paragraph

10 Exchanges roughly make up 40% of the Uniswap volume. This is surprising to me as I though that the exchanges would be heavily dominated by a few but this shows that the distribution across exchanges is quite evenly distributed (unlike Uniswap which dominates the decentralized exchange market on Ethereum). Weirdly, Huobi is the biggest exchange for Uniswap flow. My theory for this is that perhaps Asian markets may partake in DeFi more than Western Markets (would be interesting to do an analysis on this). THe next biggest players are Coinbase and FTX which control a large portion of the western market share.

The Uniswap Airdrop occurred on September 17, 2020 (Not sure why there is data previous to that on Flipside) which resulted in over 25.7 M Uniswap tokens inflowing to central exchanges the next day. The volume of the Uniswap token out of central exchanges started very strong with the first year after the launch having be having an absolute volume of over 100,000 UNI tokens per day. Since the beginning of the year, the volume has decreased with most exchanges outflowing the UNI token to other wallets. While this may sound like a bad thing, this may prove to be healthy for the Uniswap token. If the flow of the UNI token happens away from central exchanges, this means that the UNI token is being used in DeFi and governance which could prove to be a strength for the overall UNI ecosystem

Uniswap Share Share On Central Exchanges

So how much actual volume is outputted between DeFi wallets and central exchanges? 49.6 Billion Dollars! Thats honestly baffling to me but that's not the end of it...

    Conclusion

Overall, Uniswap does ALOT of volume but is only a small fraction for Central Exchanges. Lately, there has been a decrease which is not a bad thing as this may there is more use for UNI in the DeFi ecosystem. In addition, Central Exchanges have outputted a number so grand that I don't even know what it would be called (and I'm sure they are making a ton of money off that as well)

Like Doctor Evil, we are not thinking big enough! this is just a small fraction of the entire volume on central exchanges. In terms of volume, PayPal only did $936 Billion dollars. Where this gets tricky is the value of the token. Some tokens like Bitcoin could be worth anywhere between ~40-65k which is causes this number to be quite big. In the grand scheme of tokens, the UNI token does less than 1% of the volume flow between central exchanges. Lets take a look at other exchanges to see how much they are outputting

As mentioned earlier, Huobi has the highest volume for UNI, but across all tokens it is fourth in terms of volume. One other thing that I did not realize is that Kucoin is the largest (realized Binance is not included in this) and that FTX does more volume than Coinbase (probably due to the fact that FTX is used more for trading where as Coinbase is more geared towards the casual investor
