Polygon Hard Fork

Assessing the Impact of the Polygon Hard Fork on Network Health and Performance

    Introduction

Welcome to the Polygon Network Health and Performance Dashboard! Following the recent hard fork, Polygon, an Ethereum-scaling project, aimed to reduce instances of spiking gas fees and disruptive chain reorganizations known as "reorgs." The hard fork was successfully completed on January 17, 2023, and the goal was to keep gas fees low and prevent frequent reorgs. In this dashboard, we will be examining the network's health and performance both leading up to and since the hard fork.

We will be analyzing key metrics such as gas fees, volume, activity, monthly active users, and others, to determine if the software upgrade has achieved its intended goals. Has the hard fork led to lower gas fees? Have these changes affected any meaningful user metrics? Join us as we dive into the data to find out.

    Definitions

Hard Fork: A software upgrade that requires all nodes in a network to upgrade to the latest version of the software in order to continue participating in the network.

Gas Fees: A fee paid in order to transact on a blockchain network.

Disruptive Chain Reorganizations (Reorgs): A situation in which a validator node receives information that temporarily creates a new version of the blockchain, leading to disruptive changes in the network.

Network Health: Refers to the overall stability and performance of the Polygon network.

Performance: Refers to the ability of the Polygon network to function efficiently and effectively.

Volume: Refers to the amount of activity on the Polygon network, including the number of transactions, transfers, and other operations.

Activity: Refers to the level of engagement and usage of the Polygon network by users.

Monthly Active Users (MAUs): Refers to the number of unique users who have interacted with the Polygon network in a given month.

These definitions will be used in the analysis and visualization of the data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the hard fork on the Polygon network.
