Gain or Lose
Q10. Of the stakers that have swapped ETH to stETH, how much ETH did they gain or lose depending on the peg of stETH to ETH at the time of the swap? Repeat the same analysis for stakers who have swapped stETH to ETH; how much ETH did they gain or lose?
Lido is a liquid staking protocol for Ethereum, Solana, and other Chains. Stakers receive liquid, tokenized staking derivatives, also known as Lido-staked assets, to represent their claim on the underlying stake pool and its yield.
these tokens effectively unlock liquidity and remove the opportunity cost of staking since they can be used on a number of popular DeFi protocols to generate additional yield. Lido is currently the fourth largest protocol by total value locked (TVL) and accounts for almost one-third of all staked ETH.
stETH is a staked version of $ETH from LidoFinance that is meant to secure $ETH post-merge. $stETH is fully backed 1:1 by $ETH.
but since May, stETH was depegged from ETH, Lido Twitter said:
This chart shows the weekly profit or losses in ETH, by swapping ETH to stETH. the long bars that show the profits are stated since the second week of May, the date that stETH depegged from ETH, so the users that swapped their ETH to stETH, received more stETH compared to the regular days.
in the second week of May, the total profit is 61.8 ETH, but it decreased until the first week of June. stETH depegged again and created 75 $ETH profit because by swapping one ETH to stETH, instead of receiving one stETH, you would receive more.
And here is the average profit and Loss for each swap from ETH to stETH, in May it was the 0.1 ETH profit for each swap from ETH on average, and it reached 0.2 ETH in June.
in a week in December and Jan, there was an average Loss, so it means that the price of stETH went higher than ETH. in Jan and Feb also the average Profit went up to 0.23 ETH.
not let's look at the reverse swaps of the upper charts.
This chart shows the weekly total profit and loss for swapping from stETH to ETH. here there are more losses, so in 2022 users lose ETH by swapping from stETH to ETH, especially in May and June. it's because the price of stETH depegged from ETH, and went lower than ETH, so by swapping one ETH to stETH, you won't get exactly one ETH, and it would be lower.
in June, these swappers lose 85.7 ETH until now(the week is not ended yet as I'm writing this).
And here is the average profit and loss for each swap. in the first week of Feb, the average was 0.12 ETH, and in June reached 0.2 ETH.
in the following, we will look at the wallets and the number of their profits and losses in 2022.
this chart shows how many wallets made losses or profits from swapping ETH to stETH.
- 78% of 2022 swappers, made profits up to 0.1 ETH, so it was a profitable swap.
- 9.6% lose their ETH
- 1.5% made profit between 1 to 3 ETH
- 0.5% could gain above 5 ETH which is really great!
and here is the opposite of the above chart, swappers from stETH to ETH, most swappers had lost ETH.
- 80% of swappers lose up to 0.1 ETH
- 13% lose between 0.1 to .5 ETH
- 0.2% lose between 3 to 5 ETH and 0.2% lose above 5 ETH
- only 2.3% of swappers were profitable
in the following we will look at swaps between stETH and ETH, it was a risky but good opportunity to take profit from differences in prices, so let's see how was the Profits and Losses since May.
