The Eclipse Score
The validators network on Terra is a vital part of the ecosystem and, among other things, guarantees the security of the Proof Of Stake blockchain. You're probably wondering, how so?
Think of a validator like a banker or, even better, like a Bitcoin or Ethereum miner. They are responsible for authoring transactions and make sure to only add valid and non-tampered transactions to a block on the blockchain. Moreso, they are also required to regularly cast votes for the prices of Terra tokens. Misbehaviors get punished by slashing a validator. This translates to a loss of funds (including delegators' LUNA) equal to the gravity of the offense.
Validator candidates can bond their own Luna and have Luna "delegated", or staked, to them by token holders. The Columbus Mainnet currently has 130 validators, but over time this will increase to 300 validators according to a predefined schedule. The validators are determined by who has the most stake delegated to them — the top 130 validator candidates with the most stake will become Terra validators.
In this dashboard we are gonna try to create an Eclispe Score representing how good a validator is. To do sow, we are gonna base on a 3 main metrics for a validator: number of votes provided, voting power of the validator, and the missing blocks duration.
To provide a good understanding, first of all we will have a first chart where we can see each metrics represented per each validator. Finally, we will see the chart of the Eclispe Score value for each validator.
THe Eclispe Score has been calculated as follows: (Number of votes*Voting power)/Block duration
Here it can be seen the distribution of each validator. In the x axis we can see the name, in the y axis the number of votes, the bubbles size represents the validator voting power and the colors represents the blocks duration. But lets see the eclispe score scatter plot.
In this case, we can track which validator is better based on our Eclipse Score. In this case, we can highlight 3 validators: Orion Money, B-Harvest and Smart Stake, that obtained a score above 50. It demonstrated a great difference between the rest of the validators.
