Topshot NFT Sales during the NBA Conference Finals.
Analyze the NBA Conference Finals (May 17th- May 29th) and determine whether it had an impact on NBA Top Shot's volume.
- First, one can never be certain, whether or not an event has an impact and by how much, so it would be impossible to determine this with this data. One can observe trends and spikes and hypothesize but that is all one can do.
- The NBA playoff season lasts several weeks. After the conference finals there is the championship, which is up to seven games. It seems odd to expect some kind of surge during that particular period.
The chart above reflects the total transaction count and volume of Topshot NFT sales between April 1 and today. The period between May 17th and May 29th does not jump out at us in any way. There is one spike but there are intermittent spikes on about a weekly basis. In this particular example, we can’t really even infer anything from the charts. We certainly wouldn’t want to say that it was negatively impacted just because the volume went down! But we can’t even conclude that there was no positive impact since we don’t know what the charts would have looked like without the playoffs. We do see a slight recovery recently, now that the playoffs AND the championship round are over.
One insight that jumps out at me is that there does not appear to be any spike in interest at all during the entire playoff season, and in fact one could almost infer that fans would rather mess around with NBA NFTs during the off season!
Did the Warriors, Celtics, Mavericks, or Heat see higher sales volume?
The Warriors win! This is due to average sales and not to number of transactions. All in all a pretty tight distribution.
The charts below show the volume of sales by day for each team over time and in total during the conference championships.
Sadly, I have no earth-shaking revelations and have seen enough to know that further pursuit of this topic would be fruitless and uninteresting.
