Thales is a protocol that allows for the creation of peer-to-peer parimutuel markets that anyone can join. A Parimutuel Market is a market where the collateral is locked in a pool and the final payout to participants is not determined until after the market-settling event finalizes. There are several types of markets, including Up and Down markets, ranged markets, exotic markets, and Overtime Markets.

Approach

We get lists of games from the Tx generating the games from optimism.core.fact_event_logs table where

topics[0] = '0x889e2060e46779287c2fcbf489c195ef20f5b44a74e3dcb58d491ae073c1370f'.

We identify sport type of games by tags number (9001 - 9016)

we find bet amount of users from the table optimism.core.fact_transactions where to_address = '0x170a5714112daeff20e798b6e92e25b86ea603c1' and origin_function_signature in ('0x8875eb84', '0x6cc5a6ff', '0x9f916c9f', '0xec933f83') (all bet functions)

Note that the data is from 2022-08-10 to 2022-08-23

we plotted number of users of each game and also total bet volume in that game.

we found that

The game with highest users is Baltimore Orioles vs Boston Red Sox, 53 users
Most of them (8 out of 11) are from Soccer
2 of them are from Baseball
Another 1 is from UFC

Most of them are not in Top10 highest volume, except Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur and

Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman, with 5.6k and 15k USD, respectively.

We plotted daily bet volume in each sport and also the normalized version to see which sport receives the most bets on daily basis

Baseball receives the most bets on most of the days (8 out of 14)
The runner up is Soccer, receiving most bets for 4 days (Aug 15 and Aug 20 - 22)
The other 2 days is for MMA, on 19 Aug and 23 Aug

For Baseball, Football and MMA, there is just one league for each sport.

For Soccer, there are 6 leagues (at least for last 14 days).

Baseball has highest number of games, 180 games
Soccer is the runner up, it has 146 games
Football and MMA has 28 games each

MMA statistic is interesting, even it has lowest number of games and low number of users per game, but it has highest bet amount per user; 567 USD/User, and highest bet amount per game; 1,216 USD/Game.

This indicates that average users that bet on MMA is respectively rich.

Baseball gamblers also bet in large amount, a little lower than MMA. But as there are many games in there, so number of users/ bet amount per game may be lower than that of MMA

Football has moderate number of users per game and they do not bet in large amount

Soccer is similar to Football, except in EPL league that it is quite popular.
