This article mainly contains analysis of Metamask wallets statistics on Ethereum chain; Total number of wallets, ETH value held in wallets, and activity engagement.
This article answers the following questions:
- How many total Metamask wallet holders are there?
- What’s the average value of ETH held in wallets?
- What percentage of wallets are engaging in a higher order activity, like staking?
We get number of Metamask wallet holders by counting distinct number of wallets that have ever interacted with the contract 0x881D40237659C251811CEC9c364ef91dC08D300C (Metamask Swap Router)
The above table shows MAX, MIN, SUM and AVG number of ETH held in Metamask wallets. The richest wallet has 19,988.21 ETH; 1.87% value of ETH among 1.27 millions wallets, which has average value of only 0.92 ETH.
Extending from the question, the distribution of ETH and number of wallets is plotted, in order to grasp some interesting behaviors of Metamask wallets a little more.
Number of total Metamask wallets is 1.27 millions, which is 1.76% compare to number of all wallets in Ethereum, 72 millions wallets.
Lastly, top 4 Metamask wallets that has more than 10,000 ETH have aggregated value of 5.15% among all.

As the distributed graph above, we can see that number of wallets that have less than 0.01 ETH (the 1st bar) is the highest one, 41.15% of all Metamask wallets. We may presume that they are dead wallets, in the sense that they barely have enough ETH to pay gas fee, thus have nothing to do with this crypto world anymore. However, it needs deeper analysis to get precise knowledge of active/non-active wallets.
This question is challenging in the way that "How to know which activity is high order?".
We firstly look at the top functions used from DIM_FUNCTION_SIGNATURE, which are Claim, Deposit, Mint, Stake, Swap, Transfer and Withdraw.
The result shows that Swap has 100% engagement, which makes sense, because we define Metamask wallet as wallet that have interacted with Metamask Swap Router
The following highest engagement (in descending order) is Transfer > Deposit > Withdraw >= Claim > Mint > Stake.
- Number of Metamask wallets is about 1.27 millions, 1.76% of all wallets on Ethereum.
- Average number of ETH in Metamask wallets is 0.92 ETH.
- 41.15% are dead wallets, 50% hold ETH just for paying gas fee, top 8.85% hold ETH for investment.
- The high order activities are Swap(100%), Transfer(62%), Deposit(43%), Withdraw(30%), Claim(29%), Mint(25%) and Stake(21%).
